Tips for keeping students engaged and focused, boosting efficiency

Updated: Aug 31, 2019

Students always tell me that the biggest issue or challenge during the exam revision journey is that they find difficult to focus or engage into the world of that subject. I have thought about that and done some research. Here will be my conclusions after integrating my personal experiences and other professionals' suggestions. Some ways I would suggest students to try !

First, try to organize the time and construct your tailor made schedule. According to many research, human brains can normally keep focus on a certain area or field within a limited period of time, say 1 or 2 hours. Duration of focusing period depends on age, health condition and emotion, etc. So, this implies that it will be so ineffective that students spend the whole day on just revising 1 or 2 subjects. What I would suggest is that students can cut the day into sections, say 1 hour as 1 section. During that section, we fully engage into the subject content and do revision or past papers. After finishing that section, it is essential to switch channel in the next section. So we revise something else in the next hour. If we keep the schedule organized, not only we feel like the working efficiency is higher, but also our brain will always be keeping fresh and running. In other words, it can prevent us from falling asleep.

Second, try to remove all the distractions. That will mean students need a quiet, comfortable environment without any electronics, like phones in particular nowadays. Over 90% of the distractions come from our mobile devices, not matter iPad or phones. WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, mobile games are all time killers. Only if those are meaningful during your revision, otherwise better to avoid them. Before we use the time, we should save the time, especially the opportunity cost is increasing and increasing when the exam is getting closer and closer.

Third, try not just read, but do something else. That will mean instead of just reading and reading on the notes, textbooks or study guides, it will be better if students can pick up the pen, jot down some notes. During the note taking process, our brains already review and rethink the content that we need to write. So, simultaneously reading and jotting notes can boost the efficiency of revision, that works for many students in reflection.

Fourth, try to share and discuss. That will mean sometimes a revision or study group is helpful for students. Throughout the discussions, we share knowledge, experiences between each other. This action automatically refresh our brains just like pressing F5. Also, we can clarify misconceptions, misunderstanding as well as reviewing some concepts that we may have missed when revising alone. Although there will be a chance in which the group can discuss something that deviate from the subject content, still forming small study groups can increase the revision efficiency.

Last but not least, finding a suitable guidance or tutor. A tutor is different from your school teacher in which tutors can provide a tailor made revision assistance just fit your progress, your ability, your situation. Intensive learning experience from tutorial schools will be the most ideal way to get revision for students wit the minimum time invested. And I believe that is the major job of a good tutor. Not just boosting grades for students, but also assisting them in learning, getting important concepts and tackling challenges.
